Vertices and Edges
A graph consists of vertices or nodes connected by edges, which represent the relationships between the vertices. Each vertex represents an object, and each edge represents a relationship between two objects.
Directed or Undirected
A graph can be directed or undirected. In a directed graph, the edges have a direction, which means that the relationship between two vertices is one-way. In an undirected graph, the edges do not have a direction, which means that the relationship between two vertices is bidirectional.
Weighted or Unweighted
A graph can be weighted or unweighted. In a weighted graph, each edge has a weight or a cost associated with it, which represents the strength or the importance of the relationship between the vertices. In an unweighted graph, all edges have the same weight or cost.
Cyclic or Acyclic
A graph can be cyclic or acyclic. In a cyclic graph, there is at least one path that starts and ends at the same vertex. In an acyclic graph, there are no cycles, which means that there is no path that starts and ends at the same vertex.

Operations on Graph Data Structure

Traversal
We can traverse the vertices and edges of a graph using various traversal algorithms such as depth-first search (DFS) and breadth-first search (BFS). Traversal algorithms are used to visit all vertices and edges of the graph in a systematic way.
Shortest Path
We can find the shortest path between two vertices in a graph using various algorithms such as Dijkstra’s algorithm and Bellman-Ford algorithm. Shortest path algorithms are used to find the most efficient route between two vertices in a graph.
Minimum Spanning Tree
We can find the minimum spanning tree of a graph using various algorithms such as Prim’s algorithm and Kruskal’s algorithm. The minimum spanning tree is a subset of the edges that connects all vertices in the graph with the minimum possible total edge weight.
Types of Graphs
- Undirected Graphs: In an undirected graph, edges do not have a direction. That is, if there is an edge between two vertices, the relationship is bidirectional. This means that if there is an edge between vertex A and vertex B, then there is also an edge between vertex B and vertex A.
- Directed Graphs: In a directed graph, edges have a direction. If there is an edge between vertex A and vertex B, then the relationship is one-way. That is, there is a relationship from A to B, but not from B to A.
- Weighted Graphs: In a weighted graph, edges have a weight or cost associated with them. This weight represents the strength or the importance of the relationship between the vertices. For example, in a network, the weight of an edge could represent the latency or bandwidth of a link.
- Unweighted Graphs: In an unweighted graph, all edges have the same weight or cost.

Representation of Graphs
There are two commonly used ways to represent graphs: Adjacency Matrix and Adjacency List.
1. Adjacency Matrix
An adjacency matrix is a 2D array that stores the relationships between vertices in a graph. The matrix is usually square and has dimensions n x n, where n is the number of vertices in the graph. The matrix is filled with 1s and 0s, where a 1 in position (i, j) indicates that there is an edge from vertex i to vertex j. If the graph is weighted, the matrix can be filled with the weights instead of 1s and 0s.
The adjacency matrix is easy to implement and allows for efficient testing of whether there is an edge between two vertices. However, it can be inefficient in terms of space usage, especially for sparse graphs, where the number of edges is much smaller than the number of possible edges.
2. Adjacency List
An adjacency list is a collection of linked lists or arrays that store the relationships between vertices in a graph. Each vertex has a list of its adjacent vertices, which represent the edges that connect them. If the graph is weighted, each adjacent vertex can also store the weight of the edge.
The adjacency list is more space-efficient than the adjacency matrix, especially for sparse graphs, as it only stores the vertices and edges that actually exist in the graph. However, it can be less efficient for certain graph algorithms, such as testing whether there is an edge between two vertices, as it requires iterating through the list of adjacent vertices.
Graph Algorithms
There are many graph algorithms used to manipulate graphs, including:
- Breadth-First Search (BFS): BFS is a graph traversal algorithm that visits all the vertices in a graph that are reachable from a given starting vertex. It visits vertices in the order of their distance from the starting vertex, i.e., it visits all vertices at distance 1 from the starting vertex before visiting vertices at distance 2, and so on. BFS can be used to find the shortest path between two vertices in an unweighted graph.
- Depth-First Search (DFS): DFS is a graph traversal algorithm that visits all the vertices in a graph that are reachable from a given starting vertex. It explores each path as far as possible before backtracking. DFS can be used to find the strongly connected components in a directed graph.
- Dijkstra’s Algorithm: Dijkstra’s algorithm is a shortest path algorithm that finds the shortest path between two vertices in a weighted graph. It uses a priority queue to keep track of the vertices that have been visited and their distances from the starting vertex. The algorithm repeatedly selects the vertex with the smallest distance and updates the distances of its adjacent vertices.
- Bellman-Ford Algorithm: Bellman-Ford algorithm is another shortest path algorithm that can handle negative weight edges. It works by repeatedly relaxing the edges in the graph, i.e., updating the distances of the vertices based on the distances of their adjacent vertices. It detects negative weight cycles in the graph, which can cause the algorithm to fail to find the shortest path.
- Prim’s Algorithm: Prim’s algorithm is a minimum spanning tree algorithm that finds the minimum cost tree that spans all the vertices in a connected weighted graph. It starts with a single vertex and repeatedly adds the vertex with the smallest weight edge that connects it to the current tree.
- Kruskal’s Algorithm: Kruskal’s algorithm is another minimum spanning tree algorithm that finds the minimum cost tree that spans all the vertices in a connected weighted graph. It starts with a forest of single vertex trees and repeatedly adds the smallest weight edge that connects two trees until all the vertices are in a single tree.
