Join For FreeCustomer identity is the new strategic battleground that forward-thinking companies must conquer to build trust, foster loyalty, and unlock new revenue in the digital-first era. As Shiven Ramji, President of Okta's Customer Identity Cloud, explained, "Customer identity is the first digital touchpoint you have with your customers. It's also the digital touchpoint they'll encounter again and again. Customer identity is your first impression and potentially your competitive differentiation."
With customer experiences happening predominantly online, the stakes are higher than ever. "Maybe in the past, you paid lip service to customer experience as a nice-to-have. Now it's a revenue driver," said Ramji. He pointed to research showing a single bad experience leads 33% of users to walk away and abandon a brand forever.
Okta envisions customer identity as so much more than a login box. "Identity is at the center of digital transformation," Ramji noted. By integrating identity throughout the customer journey, you can personalize experiences, streamline workflows, build loyalty, and drive growth. "Customer identity becomes a pivotal part of the growth engine."
Innovate Rapidly With a Frictionless Developer Experience
To deliver exceptional digital experiences, technology leaders must provide developers with tools that make innovation fast, integration seamless, and security built-in. "Your role as a developer is both technical and strategic because you are tasked with delivering growth and pushing the boundaries of what's possible," said Ramji.
Okta aims to accelerate development and simplify complexity across every product. Ramji outlined four principles that define a superior developer experience:
- Easy to start
- Easy to get help
- Easy to use
- Easy to hack
"Developers need to spend time-solving their business' or customers' problems. If the product is too complicated to use, they're just going to move on to something else," Ramji explained.
With Okta's Fine-Grained Authorization service, developers can build sophisticated access controls and entitlements without writing custom authorization codes. By externalizing authorization logic, Okta makes it easier to scale policies across applications.
"Modern applications all have exponential complexity. Okta lets you define relationships in one place with a highly scalable, reliable service," said Ramji.
For emerging technologies like digital wallets and verifiable credentials, Okta handles the complexity of new standards so developers can focus on innovation. "Yet another spec developers have to learn," said Ramji. "We're making it super easy to support those standards."
Okta Integration Network, Identity Flow Optimizer, Actions Navigator, and Guide with Okta AI all aim to accelerate development as well. As Ramji explained, "Developers and engineers now have AI-powered inline recommendations on how to boost conversions, improve security, and build apps faster."
Achieve Seamless Scale Across the Expanding Attack Surface
With digital experiences now mission-critical, applications must always be on and ready to scale securely on demand. "IT teams are empowering every team member with SaaS apps, and developers are building those SaaS apps," said Ramji. "Our customer identity cloud is the most used identity technology among developers."
To scale confidently, Okta engineered unmatched reliability into its platform. Private cloud deployments have supported massive customer growth — handling 223 million logins, 28 million session refreshes, and 86 million signups per day.
As part of Okta's vision to provide complete identity solutions, the company announced a game-changing integration between workforce and customer identity. "Enabling SCIM to integrate our customer and workforce identity products will be free for all enterprise customers," announced Ramji. "This will allow you to truly harness the power of both clouds."
With an expanding attack surface, security is non-negotiable. Okta monitors suspicious activity across the entire customer journey and uses AI to tailor protection and remediation. "Our own Secure Identity Report shows financial services institutions are twice as likely to be attacked compared to others," said Ramji.
In response, Okta created a highly regulated identity product designed specifically for industries like healthcare and finance. Compliance certifications like SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, and extensive third-party audits validate Okta's security posture. "We are committed to providing these additional layers of security," stated Ramji.
Twilio Chief Digital Officer Reeny Sondhi also joined Okta Customer Identity CTO Bhawna Singh on stage to discuss balancing security and user experience. "For a long time, we've viewed security and identity as a necessary evil," said Sondhi. "There is so much innovation in this space now. We need to turn the tables and use security and identity as a way to drive better business value."
Realize the Full Potential of Customer Identity With Okta’s Vision
"We ground all our priorities in three customer outcomes because that's what we want to align to," Ramji explained. Okta is focused on fueling customer growth through superior experiences, rapid innovation at scale, and industry-leading security.
By looking beyond login and unlocking the full possibilities of customer identity, companies can learn about their users organically over time and turn every digital touchpoint into an opportunity to build trust.
Okta envisions identity becoming seamless and secure through groundbreaking technologies like Passkeys and digital credentials. Passkeys use public key cryptography to replace passwords with secure biometric unlocking on phones and computers.
"Passkeys hold the promise of seamless, secure, and convenient access surpassing the limitations of traditional authentication methods," stated Ramji. Mobile driver's licenses and other verifiable credentials will also transform how we manage and use identities online.
To realize Okta's vision, new capabilities like Tenant Security Manager use Okta AI to monitor threats and automatically apply security recommendations. Features like Identity Flow Optimizer analyze customer authentication patterns and provide inline recommendations to improve conversions and security.
"Our own Secure Identity Report shows financial services institutions are twice as likely to be attacked compared to others," Ramji noted. For highly regulated industries, Okta developed capabilities to address their unique fraud, compliance, and experience requirements.
Okta is committed to bringing its vision for a seamless, secure identity to life while giving customers the flexibility to choose the solutions that fit their needs best. "Neutrality and extensibility are the foundation of our platform," said Ramji. "We believe our customers should have the freedom to choose."
The Bottom Line
Customer identity is moving beyond login to become a critical driver of digital growth, innovation, and trust. By integrating identity throughout the user journey, synchronizing workforce and customer identity management, and applying AI for intelligent security, Okta aims to help every organization deliver exceptional digital experiences.
Okta's vision for the future harnesses emerging technologies like verifiable credentials and Passkeys to make identity seamless while ensuring enterprise-grade security, scale, and reliability.
